By Caro Blackwell, Updated

Over the past few days, Les Arcs has experienced mixed weather conditions with clouds and clear skies and it's remained pretty cold with temperatures staying down -4°C to -7°C and an average freezing level of 1400m. The temperatures below 1400 have been milder, creating a freeze-thaw cycle, affecting snow quality on the lower ski slopes.

Upcoming weather in Les Arcs

Overnight and this morning, we’ve had a light snowfall in Les Arcs of around 10cm, due to a cold front from the north west. The freezing level is likely to fluctuate in the next few days with Friday evening being the highest at 3100m down to around 1250m on Sunday night. Temperatures will vary between a high of 5°C on Friday morning and a minimum of -6°C on Sunday.

This cold front will quickly be replaced by high pressure from Friday for the weekend bringing föhn winds. However it will chill down again on Sunday when we will start to see snowfall.

Looking ahead

The next significant snowfall in Les Arcs looks like being Monday, where it is anticipated that around 16cm will fall overnight. The moderate snowfall will continue through Tuesday bringing up to another 12cm. The freezing level will remain low at around 1000m.

Top tips for skiers this week in Les Arcs

  • Quiet pistes: Take advantage of the January lull! Ski between 12:00 and 14:00, and you'll feel like you have the mountain to yourself.
  • Snow conditions: While the pistes arebeing really well-maintained, some spots can be quite hard-packed and icy. For a smoother ride, stick to the softer snow along the edges.
  • Gear up: Pack both low light and sunny lenses. Different thickness of layers is key to adapting to the changing temperatures, especially with the wind chill on certain lifts.
  • Stay warm: Even with mild daytime temperatures, the breeze can make it feel much colder. A buff or neck warmer will keep you comfortable on those breezy lifts.
  • Safety first: Avalanche risk is currently between 2 and 3 (moderate/considerable) out of 5. If you plan to venture off-piste, ensure you have the proper equipment, up to date weather information, and guidance.

Make the most of these last couple of quiet ski weeks in Les Arcs. The school half terms begin throughout Europe on 8th February and run through to 8th March, meaning busier on the slopes and in resort. Having said that, if you are coming out in February you’ll find some great activities and events for all the family. Check out our guide to what’s on in February in Les Arcs.
