Les Arcs Snow Report: 11th January 2016

Lots of snow this week mixed in with a bit of rain

So another week down and it’s different out there now. By a long way.

There has now been a total of 85-168cm of snowfall between 1600-3200m with a hefty majority falling last week! However, we also had our fair share of rain up to around 1800m…

The day I chose to film, typically it rained, so I decided to explore the trees around Peisey-Vallandry. As you can see in the video the snow looks deep, and it was in places, but it was also fairly heavy across the mountain, due to a mix of rain and sleet with the snow falling higher up above 1900m. Some steeper areas were good around Le Derby but as a whole, the rain made it fairly mash potatoey in consistency. Not ideal.

Hence the tumble... Luckily I was near Bar Mont Blanc, in Peisey-Vallandry, so like a good little seasonnaire I went in for a beer to dry off.

But don’t let this chitter chatter of rain dampen your spirits, those clouds have passed, snow-forecast.com is predicting a whopping 52cm of fresh snow at 2390m tonight 11.01.16, then potentially a following 71cm tomorrow! Not only that, but it is going to be a very snowy and cold week with temperatures down to -20 at 3200m on Friday, which looks like it’ll be the coldest day dropping down to -8 at resort level. Mulled wine anyone?

With this new snow coming it should open the mountain up giving access to better off piste to those looking for it, easier tree runs, more consistent piste conditions and hopefully provide the park with material to build it up some more. Obviously if you do go off piste, keep an eye on the avalanche risk and take the right gear with you, as I can imagine it’ll be high in places.

If the weather isn’t in your favour, 1800, 2000 and Peisey-Vallandry offer fantastic restaurants, bars and things to do such as live après music, pool and darts. There’s tenpin bowling, swimming/spa (Mille8) and even a laser quest! Check out this article to find out more to do.
